Mission: This project established a community-based action coalition that identified best management practices on the Big Lake Watershed. Along with this coalition, pilot projects in ecological rehabilitation were conducted along the shores of Big Lake in the Spring of 2009. The goal is to provide long-term resources and management strategies to protect the water quality of Big Lake.

Project Design: This project will identify, recruit and educate community members about watershed practices and improve shoreline habitat through the following activities.

1) Identifying Members for a Steering Committee– We will recruit members from local community groups and significant agencies to participate in organizing the open houses and a restoration project through steering committee workshops.

2) Watershed Open Houses- Watershed open houses occured in Fall 2008 and Spring 2009, providing residents and users of Big Lake with information about best practices for watershed health and provide information about local sources for assistance.

3) Identify and implement shoreline restoration project-We organized and implemented a revegetation demonstration project along the shores of Big Lake.

4) Inventory and Evaluation– Steering Committee reviewed open house survey and restoration project results and analyze data collected for future activity.

Sponsorship: This project was funded through a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service grant, as well as support from Alaska Conservation Foundation, Friends of Mat Su, and other small grants including the Royal Bank of Canada’s Blue Water Community Action Grant.

Partners: FoMs acted as facilitator in coordination with local government entities, interested community members, businesses, and groups, as well as state and national agencies including the DEC, USFWS and others.
